Pearl had come to the US from Austria in the mid 1890s and attended school in Santa Cruz, California at that time. In 1896, Max came to her and asked her to return to Austria for an arranged marriage by her family to Moritz (Morris) Gottlieb. She reluctantly complied and after her marriage to Morris, returned with him and three children in about 1906. She and Morris settled in Los Alamos from about 1907-1910, and they either participated in running the Emporium or created a separate business. Morris abandoned his family after two more children.
