A newspaper article in Caro, Michigan, January 18, 1962 recorded the death of James Oliver as follows:
FORMER CARO COUPLE OVERCOME BY GAS
Word was recived Friday morning of the death of James W. (John) Oliver formerly of Caro and now of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. According to authorities, Oliver died of gas asphysication at his Texas home on Thursday. His wife, Mary is still in a Mt. Pleasant, Texas hospital in serious condition from the same gas poisoning.
The asphysication occurred during the extreme low temperatures which have hit the Texas area and have been responsible for scores of other deaths. Reports from Mt. Pleasant indicated that something went wrong with the heating system and although Oliver called the operator, by the time police arrived it was too late to help him. Mrs. Oliver was rushed to the hospital. Oliver is a well-known former lineman for the REA of the Thumb and had retired at his native Texas home a few years ago.
He was born at Mt. Pleasant on October 10, 1881 and moved to this county in March of 1940 after having lived for a time in Bad Axe. He was one of the first employees of the Thumb REA, working first at Ubly then at Bad Axe and later at
Caro. He married Mary Vera King. She survives as does a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Mary) Goodchild of Fairgrove; and two sons, William and James of Detroit. He also leaves a brother, William of Little Rock, Arkansas; nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Funeral services and burial was at Mt. Pleasant on Sunday, January 14. He had been an active member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 226, FAM at Caro (Masonic) and had transferred his memberhship to a similar lodge at Mt. Pleasant.
Aunt Vera recovered and lived until her death in Mt. Pleasant. She suffered from sugar diabetes. She would call her brother, Bill and other members of the family from time to time. When she was finished talking--no matter what
conversation was going on--she said "and that's that" and would hang up before anything further was said. It was her way of saying goodbye.
